Avon & Somerset Constabulary helmet 1990's
The main change during the 1990's was the introduction of the metal 'enamel' helmet plate. The first versions of this read "AVON AND SOMERSET CONSTABULARY". Later on, the word "AND" was dropped in favour of just "&". See more information on this under my section on helmet plates. The foam used for the sweatband was improved to make it more durable.
Since black has been the colour used for both the foam 'insert' and shell liner, it has became harder for the owner to write his name/number inside. This is why examples can be found where the name/number has been written inside using paint, Tippex, Dymo labels or crude scratching.
The London Met Police were the first force to issue helmets to Special Constables in January 1991. Special Constables with Avon & Somerset Constabulary were issued with their helmets for the first time at the end of 1992. By 1994 there were another ten Police forces who had issued helmets to Special Constables. These were Bedfordshire, Cheshire, City of London, Derbyshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Leicestershre, Lincolnshire, and South Wales. A few Police Forces such as Surrey Police, issued their own Special Constabulary helmet plates.
