British Police Armbands
Another slightly off-topic post since Police duty armbands were no longer in use by the time Avon & Somerset Constabulary was formed in 1974. As far as I'm aware these were not used by Bristol, Somerset or Bath Police prior to Avon & Somerset Constabulary. The London Metropolitan Police were the largest Police Force to use them.
These striped bands were originally introduced at a time when Police Constables were required to wear their uniforms at all times. The armband was worn to show when they were on duty and continued in use with some Police Forces until the late 1960's.
There were also a wide variety of armbands used by the Special Constabulary during both World Wars. These were used by Special Constables who did not have a uniform. These make for an interesting collection in their own right. I've included just a few common examples here, neither of which have any makers marks. These frequently appear for sale on eBay.

Special Constabulary Armband
This next example is typical of those issued to Special Constables during the WW1 period. The centre plate is cast from aluminum and made by Hiatts of Birmingham. These sometimes included a collar number on the metal plate. |

This next example could date from the 1930's. Curiously, the buckle is the same as those used on trousers issued to German soldiers during WW2. It's stamped with the makers mark PRIMA.
